Sometimes God reaches into our lives at the moments when we feel most helpless. For Matt Ahearn, that moment came in a hospital parking lot.

In 2020, Matt's four-year-old son was diagnosed with stage-three lymphoma and faced months of chemotherapy. Standing in that parking lot, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, Matt did something he had not done in years: he prayed.

Matt asked God for protection over his son to guide him through the difficult road ahead. Over the following months, his son’s health improved and by 2021 he was in remission. In retrospect Matt can see how Christ was working behind the scenes. That vulnerable moment in the parking lot was a moment of grace, drawing him into a closer relationship with the Lord and awakening the start of his conversion to the Catholic faith.

Religion has always been a part of Matt’s life. Raised in the Jewish tradition, Matt already believed in God and valued faith, but like many young adults, exploring his faith was sidelined as his time and attention was drawn to his education, career ambitions, and family responsibilities. Yet something awakened within him that day in the parking lot, and he began searching for God with greater intention to better understand who God truly was and what role faith could play in his life.

Little-by-little, Matt started to incorporate new faith practices into his daily routine. He immersed himself in Scripture through an app that provided daily verses, he joined a men’s faith group and discovered a joyful community of believers that inspired him to further explore his faith and learn more about the Catholic faith. As he began attending church at St. Isaac Jogues, exploring Catholic teachings piqued his interest, broadened his intellect, and ignited a desire to understand the faith.

One relationship in particular proved especially influential to Matt. Through his daily videos and reflections on YouTube, Matt got to know Fr. Burke Masters the pastor of St. Isaac Jogues. Through Scripture reflections and practical insights about the faith, Fr. Burke helped Matt see the Catholic faith as more than a series of moral teachings but an invitation to a relationship with Christ. Each Bible verse he read, every mass he attended, and all the people he met through this new Catholic community ultimately culminated in his conversion.

Matt’s journey culminated during the Easter Vigil in 2024 when he was baptized into the Catholic Church at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. With Fr. Burke by his side, and a community of believers that had accompanied him along the way, he entered the Church knowing the prayer he first offered in a hospital parking lot had led him somewhere he never expected.

Since his conversion, Matt carries himself with a new sense of peace. Earlier in life, he embodied the self-help mentality. He often felt driven to control every outcome and avoid any suffering. The teachings of the Catholic faith have helped Matt manage this urge to control things, process his shortcomings, and practice acceptance. One phrase in particular has become a guiding principle for him: “There are no good days or bad days, just days of grace.”

His faith has reshaped his professional life as well. Inspired to place Christ at the center of his work, Matt has renewed his commitment to serving others through a philanthropic foundation he began several years ago. Today he has returned to the foundation with fresh ideas and the determination to use his gifts in the service to others.

The relationships he’s formed along the way have been equally transformative for Matt. He developed a close friendship with his OCIA mentor, Pat, through honest conversations about faith and life. Their connection felt providential. Together they eventually launched a BeFormed faith sharing group for young fathers, creating a space for men to grow in faith, build community, and support one another. As someone who is reserved and never felt inclined to build community through religion, Matt finds himself forming meaningful relationships through shared faith.

Today, Matt looks back on his experience in the hospital parking lot with gratitude. What seemed like one of the darkest moments of his life became the doorway to something unexpected: a relationship with Christ, a supportive faith community, and a day of grace.
